The Various Types of Indian Earrings to Choose From

Indian earrings are among the most favored pieces of jewelry among women. Available in an array of types, designs and colors, these earrings range from simple and casual, everyday wear to the more dressy earrings, made of precious metals and embedded with stones and gems.

The origin of Indian earrings dates as far back as 6th century BC. The presence of these accessories on figurines of men and women excavated from various sites around India suggest that these adornments have been an integral part of an individuals attire right from ancient times. Folklore suggests that earrings were first worn to keep away evil spirits which were believed to be able to enter the body through any of its openings and take complete control of the individual. Another belief was that individuals suffering from eye problems would receive respite by wearing these adornments. The ones made of gold were especially worn by those who suffered from headaches. It is also believed that these ornaments were traditionally seen as a sign of social status and were worn only by members of the royal family and other affluent members of the society. Whatever the origin of these adornments, it is clear that they have now become a musthave in any individual's wardrobe.

Originally fashioned out of natural materials like wood, stone, and metal, Indian earrings today are made from a wide range of materials such as glass, plastic, metal, beads and precious stones. Although available in many shapes and designs, the sizes of these pieces of jewelry are restricted to the holding capacity of the individuals earlobe. The weight of these accessories is restricted in order to avoid any damage or tearing of any form. To ensure no damage occurs, excessively long or heavy earrings are not recommended.
A large variety of Indian earrings are available to the consumers today. The stud type is the most common and simplest of all the varieties available. Preferred for everyday use, they give the appearance of floating on the ear, since it is difficult to see what is holding it in place. Hoop earrings, also known as baliyaan, are another variant. Semicircular or circular in design, these are quiet popular for the touch of glamour that they add to any outfit.
