In a new interview on the glossy title's YouTube channel The Look, the star reveals that she and the celebrity photographer's bands used to play together.
Speaking immediately after the photo shoot had taken place, she said: 'I had so much fun today, and Terry Richardson, first time! But you know what's weird - it's not the first time, because... No Doubt used to play with his band, Double Freak...

Old friends: Though the new Harper's Bazaar
cover was the first time Gwen Stefani and Terry Richardson had done a
photoshoot together, it turns out their bands used to play together
'back in the day'
History: The pair had a blast on set, reminiscing about their 'pretty freaky' time on the 'LA scene'
'Back in the day it was pretty freaky - it was LA scene, you know, this whole thing.'
Given their history, it comes as little surprise that the pair had a blast on set.
The singer, 42, who is set to release her new album next month, could be seen dancing around in the high-octane ballgowns between shots.
The footage also revealed some of the efforts that went into making Ms Stefani look cover girl-flawless, with an army of hair stylists and make-up artists tweaking and touching up at every opportunity.

Risqué reputation: Mr Richardson is considered the enfant terrible of the fashion world
As with the interview in the magazine itself, the conversation in the YouTube clip turns to lipstick, and Ms Stefani reveals how she came to make bright red lipstick her signature.
'I love it, I love red lipstick - ever since my grandma bought me this thing, it had like six different lipsticks,' she reveals.
'It was the first time I wore red and I put it on, it was in my car, in the rearview, and I was like, "I like that look." Ever since then. Thanks grandma!'
Style signature: One frame shows a make-up
artist perfecting that famous bold lip, which ranged in shade from rich
pink to deep red on the shoot

She added that she has more lipsticks than she can count, and, contrary to popular belief, does wear more than one colour on her lips.
'There's so many different versions of red,' she said. 'I wear pink a lot, and I wear lipgloss sometimes... You know what I mix it up!'
And instead of wiping it all off when she comes home, she even wears a bold hue around the house, she reveals in the September issue of Harper's Bazaar.
'I like to make my husband [Gavin Rossdale] like me more, and he likes it when I'm wearing make-up,' she explained.
Flawless: Ms Stefani wears a Versace dress in one of the final shots that made the magazine spread
Ms Stefani also opened up about how she keeps in shape, and was refreshingly honest about her workouts.
'There is no secret: You just have to eat healthy, work out, and torture yourself!' she joked.
Indeed, although she works up a sweat on stage with her band No Doubt, she also hits the gym as often as her busy schedule allows.
Pretty in pink: Gwen Stefani is a human doll as she poses for Harper's Bazaar in a huge ruffled Alexander McQueen gown
Playing dress up: The star, who wore a Jil
Sander dress on the magazine cover with an Alexis Mabille couture hat,
admits she has 'always been a girl who loves to dress up'
Of course her other incentive for staying so slim is fashion
'I like to wear clothes too much, so I try to keep focused,' she added.
The mother-of-two poses in a series of statement dresses for the magazine, including a ravishing candy pink Alexander McQueen creation made entirely of tiers of ruffles.
And it is little wonder she looks so comfortable wearing it - she admits: 'I've always been a girl who loves to dress up.'
In love: The singer with husband Gavin Rossdale on the beach in Palm Beach, Florida at the weekend
Family orientated: Ms Stefani with her children Kingston, six, (front) and Zuma, almost four (back)
Ms Stefani is open about her life as a working mother, with her sons Kingston, six, and Zuma, who turns four this month.
Cover girl: The singer covers the September issue of Harper's Bazaar
And while the star has a rock chick persona, she revealed that she lived at home with her Catholic family until she was 25.
'When I started dating Gavin, I was still at my parents' house. Yeah, it's a little weird.'
She adds that she isn't bothered by stories about herself, even if they prove untrue.
On rumours that her marriage is in trouble, she says: 'That someone would say something untrue or bad about me doesn’t bother me. It’s like water off a duck’s back...
'None of that stuff matters. There’s something in me, being this passive person, that those kinds of things don’t upset me.
'I know they can say anything; they can just make something up. But what are you going to do? It’s not part of my reality, so it’s okay.'
